Evidence Based Formula
Simplix™ was developed by two licensed Naturopathic Doctors. This is a nutraceutical very thoughtfully designed to be a comprehensive, supportive supplement for those suffering from acute and recurrent HSV infection. It delivers virus defence support by several different mechanisms, at high potencies and standardizations. Table 1 outlines the formula.
The main therapeutic virus modifying activity derives from the multiple synergistic sources of polysaccharides: a medicinal mushroom, Lentinula edodes(Shiitake) [8, 9, 10, 11, 12], and two seaweeds, brown Laminaria japonica, and red Chrodrus crispus. More specifically, sulfated polysaccharides [13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19], which are found in these mushroom and seaweeds, have been shown repeatedly in a variety of studies to have antiviral effects, including HSV-1 and HSV-2, with Fucoidan being especially well-researched [20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 26, 27]. The main mechanism of action of the polysaccharides is by blocking viral attachment and entry into host cells [9]. They also act as immunostimulants, which a well-established function of medicinal mushrooms [28, 29, 30, 31].
Complementing the polysaccharides are 3 botanicals with general antiviral as well as anti-HSV activity: Andrographis panniculata [32, 33, 34, 35, 36, 37, 38, 39], Glycyrrhiza glabra [40, 41, 42, 43], and Melissa officinalis [44, 45, 46, 47, 48]. Andrographis and Glycyrrhiza also posses adaptogenic properties that support the body’s response to stress [49], and Melissa is known for its anxiolytic effects [50].
The adaptogenic effects of several of the ingredients is particularly important for HSV recurrence, since stress and anxiety are know to exacerbate frequency of breakouts [51, 52].
L-Lysine is traditionally known as the anti-HSV amino acid [53], and is therefore included to complement average dietary intake. A critical component of viral propagation is the inclusion of Arginine, and it is believed that Lysine competes with Arginine, and therefore may hamper the ability of the virus to multiply.
Zinc, and vitamins C and B12 are dosed according to their Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA) doses to ensure adequacy, which is important for proper immune function [54].
Quality and Potency
The formulators of Simplix™ know that getting the right ingredients together is only part of the picture. Potency of extracts, standardized actives, adequate servings, and sustainable and responsible sourcing make the difference between an average supplement and an exceptional one.
Here’s What We’ve Ensured:
Hot water mushroom extraction, as this is the best method to extract active polysaccharides
• Shiitake is standardized to 30% polysaccharides
• Laminaria japonica is standardized to 40% fucoidan
- 4:1 extract ratio of Lentinula edodes and Melissa officinalis
- 10:1 extract ratio of Andrographis
- Wild-cultivated seaweeds
- Highly reputable c-GMP certified suppliers and manufacturers
- Heavy metal and microbial testing
Holistic Perspective
An important part of our philosophy is understanding and accommodating the interconnectedness of the various aspects of human health, as well as its relationship to the natural world and to each other.
Simplix® focuses on evidence-based ingredients, but also incorporates more traditional perspectives from all over the world.
- Chondrus crispus is sourced from the South of France.
- Lentinula (shiitake) is a well-known medicinal and edible mushroom from Japan.
Traditional Chinese Medicine has also utilized Andrographic and Glycyrrhiza medicinally for centuries:
- Andrographis is considered a ‘cooling’ herb to counteract the ‘fire/heat’ of viral infections
- Glycyrrhiza is considered a ‘driver’ to deliver herbal medicines into their intended channels.
The powerful polysaccharides that form the basis of the formula are not only sourced from several different botanicals, but from also several different natural biomes, encompassing land and sea:
- Wood-grown Lentinula mushrooms
- Ocean-grown Laminaria and Gigartina/Chondrus/Red Seaweed
